Resurrection in John’s Gospel

Journey through this four-week series or visit each guide as a stand-alone study. Explore two texts leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus followed by two texts that contemplate the mystery of Christ’s resurrection.

John 11:38-44, Jesus Raises Lazarus From the Dead

The resurrection of Lazarus symbolically foreshadows Jesus’ resurrection, and those who witness the miracle are invited to see reality the way God sees it. The mystery of Jesus’ resurrection creates a pathway to full and lasting life. Jesus sees us and calls us by name, which fills us with hope.

John 18:1-14, Jesus Arrested

Judas betrays Jesus to the Roman soldiers and Jewish officials. Jesus creatively asserts his agency in the situation. Jesus’ arrest demonstrates that true power conquers by peace, not violence. His sacrifice inspires us to live peaceably and creatively.

John 20:11-18, Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene

Mary Magdalene is the first person to see the resurrected Jesus and the first to preach the news of his resurrection. She mistakes him for the gardener, which may be exactly what he intended. Jesus redeems humankind through his resurrection in a garden, and restores God’s original mandate for us to work and care for the earth. Understanding part of God’s plan for humans gives a sense of purpose. Recognizing Jesus as the “gardener” who tenderly cares for our lives builds trust and intimacy.

John 21:1-14, Jesus and the Miraculous Catch of Fish

The third appearance of the resurrected Jesus to his disciples takes place in an ordinary fishing context. Jesus reveals the nature of God as someone who pursues relational restoration and seeks co-labourers to do his kingdom work on the earth. We can relate to the disciples’ experience with Jesus, especially when we feel restricted by our human failures or limitations.

Luke 10:38-40, Jesus at Martha’s Home

Although we have many roles and expectations in our lives, our identity is most securely found in Jesus, and he will lovingly reorient us when we find ourselves stuck in unrealistic expectations, strong emotions, or isolation. Because of Jesus’ response to Martha and Mary, we know Jesus always offers us love, connection, and hope.

Mark 10:17-31, Jesus and the Rich Man

Jesus’ challenging invitation to the rich young man reveals God’s desire to have wholehearted followers who are willing to align themselves with God’s kingdom values here on earth. A sense of identity and purpose grows as people allow themselves to be seen and loved by Jesus; this knowing love awakens courage and willingness to be transformed into the likeness of Christ.
